Nalayira Divya Prabandham is a collection of 4,000 verses which are considered to be one of the most sacred Hindu text in the Shaiva tradition. This book has been compiled by the famous poet, sage and scholar Paripura Narayana Desika (Pundit Puna Krishnacharya) during the 9th century. The original author and date of compilation of Nālāyiraḍiyāḷa Prabandham is not known. However, scholars believe that it was completed by "Pundit Puna Ksetra Krishnacharya" (the 11th century CE). The text was written as a pure philosophical work as opposed to other class books such as devotional hymns as well as religious songs. The verses were composed in Sanskrit and Tamil language. The Nalayira Divya Prabandham contains four thousand verses, and each verse consists of 10 words. The Nalayira Divine Prabhandam is a collection of 4000 verses in which the Hindu Trinity Lord Siva is praised in 3000 verses, while the other 1000 are meant for Divine Mother or Parvati. This scripture exists in Sanskrit and Tamil language. The uniqueness of this work lies in the fact that it describes the three divine personalities viz., Siva, Vishnu and Brahma in one single scripture. Its significance is that it is the central text in Shaivism which is dedicated to Lord Siva. According to Prof. K.Sasirekha Nayanar, the poet Adi parva, who has composed hymns for Lord Siva also belongs to the same era as the person who compiled Nalayira Divya Prabandham. While taking into consideration his discussion with some scholars, Prof. K.Sasirekha Nayanar opined that Adi parva was mentioned by them after he had finished his composition of "Kandaramangalam" (the sacred verses of Lord Shiva). The Nalayira Divya Prabandham is considered as the complete representation of Shaiva Panchagavya. Sri Rama Ramana Maharishi was known to recite this scripture everyday. The complete work consists of 4008 verses, arranged in 13 chapters, each having 100 verses.
